Different glazing techniques

Different glazing techniques

Įvairios glazūravimo technikos

Clay glazing is a ceramic process that adds colour, gloss and protection to clay. There are several different clay glazing techniques which give different results. In this article we will discuss some popular clay glazing techniques:

1.Dipping:

  • Perfect for small or monochrome items.
  • The container with the liquid glaze is immersed in it fully or partially, covering the entire surface.
  • It can also be used several times to obtain a smooth coat.

2. Brushing:

  • The glaze is applied/painted with a brush directly onto the clay surface.
  • This allows the artist to control the thickness and texture of the glaze layer.
  • Different brushes can create different textures and effects.

3. Bubbling:

  • The glaze shall be mixed with water and dishwashing liquid.
  • The glaze is blown with a straw and the bubbles are poured onto the surface of the clay.

4. Spraying:

  • The glaze shall be sprayed onto the clay surface with a spraying agent.
  • This technique produces a smooth layer and a uniform coating.

5. Salt Firing:

  • During the process, a quantity of salt is added to the furnace.
  • The burning of the salt causes it to react with the glaze and the surface of the clay, creating a unique lustre and colour spectrum.

6. Raku Firing:

  • The technique involves quickly heating the kiln and transferring the hot ceramics into a special raku container.
  • The smoke and the burning organic wood produce spectacular and even unpredictable results.

Each of these techniques gives unique results, so you can experiment and combine them in your work to get the desired effect. It is important to observe safety rules and work carefully with glazes to avoid accidents.

If you are just starting to sculpt your first pieces, I recommend that you attend my ceramics classes. In the class you will learn all the basics you need to learn how to mould and glaze correctly.

Art therapy: how art improves emotional well-being?

Art therapy: how art improves emotional well-being?

Meno terapija kaip menas gerina emocinę savijautą

Art therapy is an effective way to build emotional resilience and find harmony through creativity.

Art therapy, whether art, music, dance or writing, promotes self-expression and emotional regulation. Research shows that creative activities activate the brain centres responsible for psychological well-being. Drawing, music or ceramics help people express feelings that are difficult to put into words, build self-confidence and improve overall emotional well-being.

Creative activities such as ceramics classes improve emotional health and reduce stress. Clay moulding promotes relaxation, develops patience and strengthens inner peace. Handwork activates the senses and helps to achieve a meditative state. The ceramics classes at Karinacraft Studio not only allow you to learn new skills, but also to find emotional balance through the creative process.

The essence and main methods of art therapy

Art therapy is a method of creative expression that helps improve emotional and psychological health. It is used both individually and in groups to promote self-expression, emotional regulation and inner harmony.

Basic art therapy techniques

  • Art therapy: drawing, painting, clay sculpting to relieve stress and visualise emotions.
  • Music therapy: listening and creating music promotes emotional discharge and reduces anxiety.
  • Drama therapy: role-playing and improvisation build confidence and help overcome fears.
  • Dance therapy: movement helps to express emotions and reduce tension.
  • Writing therapy: diaries, poetry and stories help you to structure your thoughts and understand your feelings.

Effects of art on emotional health

Art therapy has a positive impact on emotional health by promoting relaxation, reducing stress and anxiety and enhancing self-expression. Creative activities help you to better understand your emotions, focus on the creative process, distract you from everyday worries and balance your emotions. Molding clay creates a calming sensation and listening to or creating music harmonises the emotional state.

Creative expression can help alleviate symptoms of depression. Art therapy stimulates the production of dopamine, the hormone of happiness, provides an emotional outlet and allows inner conflicts to be transformed into a creative outcome. Art therapy allows visual expression of emotions, while spontaneous drawing or colouring helps to reveal subconscious feelings and relax the mind.

Writing therapy provides space for self-reflection. Drama therapy allows you to safely experience a range of emotions through role-play. Movement and dance therapy allows you to release tension through body expression.

Self-knowledge and self-esteem are strengthened through the creative process. Ceramics classes, especially those such as those at Karinacraft Studio, help to experience a sense of fulfilment and increase confidence in one’s creative abilities. Music and writing therapy allow people to reflect on their experiences, express unspoken feelings and develop emotional resilience.

Scientifically proven effectiveness of art therapy

The effects of art therapy have been confirmed by psychological and neurological studies.

  • Psychological research: creative activities reduce stress, improve mood and activate the emotion-regulating areas of the brain.
  • Therapeutic applications for mental disorders: art therapy is effective in treating PTSD, depression, autism.
  • Changes in brain function: neuroimaging studies show that artistic activities enhance emotional control, reduce stress and improve motor skills.

Practical applications of art therapy

Age category Effect
Children Helps express emotions through drawing, games and music.
Adults Reduces stress, encourages self-reflection.
Seniors Improves memory, emotional state, and social relationships.

How to incorporate art therapy into everyday life?

Incorporating art therapy into your daily routine can be as simple as spending a few minutes drawing, colouring or writing. Choose activities that bring you joy, such as painting in the morning or sketching during breaks. Even short creative moments help you to relax, express your emotions and improve your well-being.

Ceramic techniques: from glazes to Raku

Ceramic techniques: from glazes to Raku

Keramikos Technikos: Nuo Glazūrų iki Raku

Ceramic techniques are the various methods used to work, decorate and fire clay. These techniques not only help to create beautiful and functional pieces, but also reflect deep cultural traditions and the artist’s personal creative goals.

Ceramics allows artists to experiment with materials, textures and colours, opening up endless possibilities for expressing creativity.

You can book ceramics classes not only for yourself but also for your friends and family.

Applying glazes – decorating techniques

The use of glazes is one of the main ceramic techniques that gives the products a protective layer and an aesthetic gloss or matt finish. Glazes are a mixture of minerals, clays and oxides which, when fired, produce a variety of colour and textural effects.

The most popular types of glazes:

  • Glossy glazes: create smooth, shiny surfaces.
  • Matte glazes: Gives a subtle, elegant finish.
  • Translucent glazes: Allows you to see the texture or design underneath the glaze.
  • Special Effects Glazes: Can create metallic sheen, cracks or colour gradients.

Glazes are used not only for decorative purposes, but also to protect the product from moisture and mechanical damage. Artists often combine several types of glazes to create complex and unique surface effects.

Raku – the burning process

Raku baking is a technique in which the wares are fired very quickly and cooled rapidly with sawdust or other organic material. This technique produces dramatic surface effects such as natural crackle lines, deep black surfaces or unexpected colour gradients.

The process of Raku involves several steps:

  • Heat the product in an oven to about 900-1000°C.
  • The red-hot product is placed in a container with sawdust, paper or straw.
  • The organic material is ignited and the container is covered to restrict oxygen.
  • The work is rapidly cooled to create unique surface effects.

Raku ceramics have a strong symbolic link to Japanese tea ceremonies and are highly valued for their authenticity and visual distinction. In modern ceramics, this technique is also used for experimental artistic projects.

Handmade ceramics

The handmade ceramic technique is one of the oldest and most valued methods. In this technique, the clay is shaped by hand without mechanical tools, making each piece unique. Handmade ceramics allows makers to create products that reflect their personal vision and creative energy.

Benefits of handmade ceramics:

  • Organic shapes: clay is often irregular, but this gives it a special charm.
  • Uniqueness: each piece is unique and unrepeatable.
  • Flexibility: The technique allows experimentation with shapes, textures and decorations.

This technique is often used to create decorative vessels, sculptures or unique interior elements. Handmade ceramics are growing in popularity because of their sustainability, authenticity and the possibility of making personalised pieces.

Casting techniques

Casting is a modern ceramic technology that allows the creation of many identical products. It involves pouring clay into plaster moulds, which ensure a precise contour and a smooth surface for the product.

Application of casting techniques:

  • Serial production (plates, cups, bowls).
  • Precision of design elements.
  • Surface detail and uniformity.

Casting is particularly popular for identical ceramics, but artists often combine it with handmade elements to add uniqueness.

Christmas calligraphy education in Rumšiškės Library

Christmas calligraphy education in Rumšiškės Library

kaligrafijos-edukacija-karina-piecaityte-1

In December, Rumšiškės Library hosted a special calligraphy education for fifth graders. This activity gave pupils the opportunity to learn about the art of calligraphy and master the pen technique. During the education, the participants tried to make various ornaments and one of the tasks was to draw a Christmas tree. The pupils took up the challenge enthusiastically and completed the tasks perfectly, delighting both themselves and others with their results.

Knowing your pen and the creative process

One of the most interesting moments of the education was the students’ attempt to master the quill pen – not everyone is able to master this ancient writing instrument immediately. However, the fifth-graders were full of enthusiasm and very quickly mastered the basic techniques of calligraphy. They tried to draw precise lines and ornaments using their creativity and attention to detail. Calligraphy is not only an art, but also an exercise in patience and diligence, and each student gained useful skills from this educational experience.

The joy of sharing creativity

Every education gives me the opportunity not only to create myself, but also to share my experience with others. This is what gives me the greatest joy – to create with young artists and watch them discover new ways of creative expression. These moments in the Rumšiškės Library were special – not only did the students learn about calligraphy, but they also experienced the joy of the creative process themselves.

I invite you to join the creative educations

If you are interested in taking part in calligraphy or other creative workshops, please contact me. Together we can discover new ways of creating and experience the joys of the artistic process.

Presentation of the exhibition in Kaišiadorys

Presentation of the exhibition in Kaišiadorys

In November, a special event took place in Kaišiadorys – the presentation of my exhibition and graphic arts education. This event was not only an opportunity to show my work, but also to share printmaking techniques with young people. The education was attended by 10th graders who actively engaged in the creative process and embarked on a journey of artistic discovery. The event was a great opportunity to get to know the world of printmaking and discover its possibilities.

Graphic arts education for students

During the education, the students learned various graphic techniques through which they could express their creative ideas. Each participant had the opportunity to create unique graphic works on their own. The young artists experimented with lines and shapes and discovered how much can be said through a simple line. Graphic art opened the door to new spaces of creative thinking, giving students the opportunity to try themselves in a different form of artistic expression.

Creative inspiration for the younger generation

The event was a reminder of the importance of the arts in the lives of the younger generation. Graphic arts education not only provided students with technical skills, but also inspired them to further creative activities. The children were enthusiastically engaged in the process, and their energy, questions and unique creations were a delight to all present. This kind of communication through art not only helps to unlock the potential of young talents, but also to develop their critical thinking and creative self-expression.

New exhibition of mine artworks

New exhibition of mine artworks

On 29 August, an exhibition of my personal paintings was presented in Kaunas Sobor. A series of works inspired by the poem “The Divine Comedy” by Alighieri Dante, which is considered a masterpiece of Italian literature and one of the most important works of medieval European fiction.

Given that in this poem Dante tells the story of his journey through hell, purgatory and paradise, a church setting has been chosen for the presentation of the exhibition, which perfectly reflects the atmosphere of the work and the works.
